Two young men in Pakistan have reportedly been arrested after allegedly using an artificial intelligence chatbot to ask questions related to planning a murder. According to a report published by The News, information from their chatbot conversations was reportedly shared with the FBI and later passed on to Pakistani authorities.
The report by journalist Umar Cheema said the two cases were unrelated. One suspect was from Bahawalpur and the other from Karachi, and there was reportedly no connection between the two. Both were described as fans of American crime drama series and had allegedly developed separate ideas involving violence.
According to the report, the Bahawalpur-based youth allegedly considered killing his father and was influenced by the television series Breaking Bad. The report said he was interested in the way the show depicted the use of chemicals and poison and subsequently asked the AI chatbot Claude questions about chemicals and their quantities.
The report further stated that questions indicating an alleged intention to kill his father and inquiries about changing chemical quantities triggered a report from Claude’s company to the FBI. The information was subsequently shared with Pakistani authorities, leading to an investigation into the young man.
During the investigation, the youth’s parents were reportedly questioned. According to the report, they later forgave their son. The case nevertheless highlighted how AI companies may respond when chatbot conversations appear to indicate potential plans for serious violence.
The second case involved a young man from Karachi. According to the report, he allegedly told the chatbot that the son of a police officer had insulted his father and that he wanted to take revenge by killing him. The young man was reportedly influenced by the crime series Dexter.
The report said his alleged plan involved abducting the police officer’s son and throwing him into a sewer. He also reportedly discussed the idea with Claude, with the conversation subsequently being reported. During questioning, however, the young man told police that he had only been imagining a story and had no actual intention of carrying out the plan.
