Bangladesh Signals Interest in Pakistan-Turkey-Saudi Defence Framework

DHAKA: Bangladesh has indicated that it may consider joining an economic or defence framework involving Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, according to comments attributed to Bangladeshi Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir.

Speaking in an interview with a Bangladeshi news agency, Kabir said Dhaka was maintaining a positive outlook toward the possibility of becoming part of an economic or defence arrangement involving the three countries. He stressed that any decision would be assessed in light of Bangladesh’s national interests.

The adviser said Bangladesh would also take into account developments in the global economy and changes in international trade while considering such cooperation. His remarks signal Dhaka’s interest in exploring new regional partnerships amid shifting geopolitical and economic dynamics.

Kabir also highlighted the importance of improving practical bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan. He said the two countries were strengthening their engagement through regular diplomatic activities and maintaining efforts to expand cooperation.

According to the foreign affairs adviser, Bangladesh is also working to increase bilateral trade and people-to-people contacts with Pakistan. Greater economic interaction and stronger public links could provide a broader foundation for improving relations between the two countries.

Bangladeshi media has also reported that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit Saudi Arabia soon following an invitation from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The reported visit could provide an opportunity for discussions on bilateral and regional matters.

Bangladesh’s latest position comes as Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia continue to attract attention over closer strategic and defence cooperation. Dhaka’s indication that it is open to examining such a framework could add a new dimension to regional diplomatic and economic relations, although no formal decision on Bangladesh joining any specific alliance has been announced.
