French Open Prize Money Dispute Sparks Boycott Threat by Top Women Players

The second Grand Slam of the year, French Open, is facing growing tension as a dispute over prize money emerges between players and tournament organizers. The controversy is gaining attention across the tennis world.

Top women players, including world number one Aryna Sabalenka and American star Coco Gauff, have openly expressed dissatisfaction. Both have warned that a boycott of the tournament is possible if demands are not met.

A joint statement released by several leading players highlighted concerns about revenue distribution. According to the statement, players are expected to receive less than 15% of the tournament’s total revenue, which they consider unfair.

Sabalenka emphasized that players may have no choice but to take strong action. She stated that fighting for their rights is essential and that a boycott could become inevitable if negotiations fail.

The Belarusian star also added that the current situation reflects injustice toward players. She expressed hope that ongoing discussions would lead to a mutually beneficial solution but stressed that players deserve a larger share.

Reports indicate that the total prize money for this year’s French Open has been increased by 9.5%, reaching $72.19 million. However, players argue that this increase is still insufficient compared to the tournament’s overall earnings.

For comparison, prize money at other Grand Slams remains significantly higher. The US Open offers $90 million, the Australian Open $80.06 million, and Wimbledon $72.51 million, intensifying the debate over fairness in tennis.
