Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman Challenges Petroleum Levy in Court

Islamabad: Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, has challenged the petroleum levy in the Federal Constitutional Court, calling it unjust and a major burden on citizens.

Speaking to media in Islamabad, he stated that a formal petition has been filed against the petroleum levy and broader inequalities in the energy sector.

He argued that the levy accounts for nearly 42–43% of the ex-refinery price, placing excessive financial pressure on consumers without clear justification.

According to him, petroleum pricing has no logical linkage with the levy, and the government has already collected trillions of rupees under this head.

He further claimed that these funds were originally intended for refinery upgrades, but due to lack of modernization, Pakistan continues to rely on imported refined fuel.

Hafiz Naeem also highlighted that petrol carries a levy of Rs117 per litre, disproportionately affecting ordinary citizens, especially motorcycle users.

He added that the public is also burdened by high electricity costs, noting that Rs1800 billion in capacity payments were collected in the power sector last year.
