Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has described India’s reported unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty as a “provocative and concerning” step, warning that such actions could have serious implications for millions of people in Pakistan.
Addressing the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) in Manila, Dar said that a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in South Asia.
He stated that any unilateral move regarding the Indus Waters Treaty could directly affect the interests and water security of Pakistan’s population. Dar stressed that international agreements should be respected and implemented in accordance with their established legal framework.
The deputy prime minister also highlighted the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving regional disputes. He said the Islamabad reconciliation process had created an important opportunity to promote peace and reduce tensions in the region.
Calling on all parties to exercise restraint, Dar urged countries to address disagreements through diplomatic engagement rather than unilateral actions. He emphasized that constructive dialogue remains the most effective path toward regional stability.
Referring to regional security concerns, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s position that Afghan territory should not be used for terrorist activities against Pakistan. He stressed the need for collective efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen regional cooperation.
The deputy prime minister said Pakistan remains committed to promoting peace, mutual respect and international cooperation through dialogue and adherence to international agreements.
His remarks came during discussions on political and security issues affecting the Asia-Pacific region, where foreign ministers and senior officials exchanged views on regional stability, security cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
