The Israeli defence minister threatens Iranian leaders amid heightened tensions following funeral ceremonies in Tehran for Iran’s late Supreme Leader. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel would continue to act against anyone it believes poses a threat to the country, while reaffirming that Israeli forces remain prepared to respond to future security challenges.
According to Israeli media reports, Katz claimed Israel was responsible for the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, alleging that he had directed efforts against Israel. He also warned that any future Iranian leader pursuing similar policies could face the same outcome. Iranian officials strongly condemned the remarks, describing them as provocative and warning of a firm response to any threats against Iran’s leadership.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticised the statements and reiterated that Tehran would respond immediately to any action targeting the country’s people or senior officials. The exchange of statements has further increased tensions between the two regional rivals following months of military and diplomatic confrontations.
Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said implementing the recently signed memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States would be difficult but possible. Speaking during meetings in Tehran, he stressed that Iran would continue supporting its regional allies while insisting that negotiations should protect the interests and territorial integrity of countries across the region.
Ghalibaf also stated that lasting peace in Lebanon would require Iran’s participation, arguing that Tehran remains an important regional actor. He said Lebanon’s sovereignty was a key issue during negotiations with the United States and praised Hezbollah’s role in supporting Iran during recent regional hostilities.
The developments come as military activity continues in southern Lebanon despite a US-mediated framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon. Lebanese state media reported that Israeli forces demolished homes in Aitaroun and carried out an explosion in Houla, while Israeli and Lebanese officials continue discussions over a phased Israeli withdrawal from border areas under international mediation.
