Jamaat-e-Islami has ended its 35-day sit-in outside the Governor House in Karachi over the petroleum levy, with the party leadership announcing a new phase of its protest movement toward Islamabad.
Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman addressed participants in Karachi and announced that a long march to Islamabad would begin from Karachi by train. He said caravans from Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would also join the march.
During his address, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman highlighted the economic difficulties faced by ordinary citizens and criticised what he described as powerful interest groups operating in different sectors of the economy.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leader specifically referred to the sugar, flour, independent power producer and banking sectors, alleging that these groups contribute to the financial burden on the public.
Jamaat-e-Islami Deputy Emir Liaquat Baloch also announced the planned movement, describing it as a “super long march” under the leadership of Hafiz Naeemur Rehman. He said the march would formally begin from Karachi and move toward Islamabad.
The announcement came after the conclusion of the fifth round of talks between the government team and Jamaat-e-Islami representatives. The negotiations focused on the party’s demands concerning economic pressures on the public, including the petroleum levy.
