PML-N AJK elections remained in the spotlight on Tuesday as Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz described her party’s performance in the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections as an “outstanding victory.” In a televised address, she urged the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to accept the election outcome and respect democratic principles.
Maryam Nawaz said political parties should accept the public’s verdict with maturity. Referring to criticism from PPP leaders, she expressed disappointment over their response and said democratic values require both winners and losers to respect the electoral process.
Responding to allegations raised by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the Punjab chief minister said election outcomes are determined by voters rather than state institutions. She maintained that the public alone decides which political party receives the mandate to govern.
She also recalled the Gilgit-Baltistan elections, saying the PML-N had accepted the PPP’s victory and congratulated the party after it secured a majority. According to Maryam Nawaz, the PML-N respected the electoral outcome and supported the democratic transition at that time.
The chief minister rejected allegations of electoral rigging in the AJK polls. She argued that if previous election victories by rival parties were accepted without such claims, the same democratic standard should apply following the latest election results.
Maryam Nawaz further said political parties should focus on governance, performance and public welfare instead of making allegations after elections. She claimed that presenting a clear development agenda and addressing public concerns are essential to gaining voters’ confidence.
The first phase of the AJK elections has intensified political debate among major parties, with competing narratives emerging over the electoral process and results. The election outcome is expected to remain a key political issue as the democratic process continues.
