The judicial commission investigating the Mir Raza case has raised serious questions about the handling of the investigation and advised the young businessman’s business partner, Ahmed, to meet the family if he has important information about the case.
Justice Umar Sial told Ahmed that if he had several secrets or knew information that could help clarify the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s death, he should meet the deceased’s family and answer their questions. The commission suggested that Ahmed provide his responses in writing along with an affidavit.
During the proceedings, Justice Umar Sial also expressed strong displeasure with former investigating officer Shabbir Laghari over his role in the investigation. The judge questioned his involvement from the post-mortem stage through the collection and handling of evidence.
Justice Sial observed that the former investigating officer appeared to have remained at the police station while documents prepared by other officials were presented to him for signatures. The judge further questioned whether the officer had attempted to protect other officials involved in the case.
The judicial commission also criticized the overall handling of the investigation, saying that the police had badly mishandled several aspects of the case. The commission noted that cases can remain unresolved in different parts of the world, but families generally do not face the same level of uncertainty if investigative procedures are properly followed.
The commission once again addressed Mir Raza’s business partner Ahmed and encouraged him to communicate directly with the family. It said that if he possessed information or undisclosed details, he should meet the family and respond to their questions in written form under oath.
Speaking to the media, Mir Raza’s father’s lawyer, Jibran Nasir, raised further concerns about the investigation. He claimed that statements from 23 of the 33 witnesses were recorded by police officers other than the investigating officer. According to Nasir, the investigating officer acknowledged this point before the commission.
