Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is in good health and has recovered from injuries to his face and legs. Pezeshkian made the remarks during an interview with U.S. media, saying he had personally met the Supreme Leader twice.
Pezeshkian said one of his meetings with Mojtaba Khamenei lasted for more than seven hours. He said the Supreme Leader does not have any significant health problems and is medically healthy. According to Pezeshkian, the injuries previously suffered by Khamenei have also healed.
The Iranian president also addressed Tehran’s nuclear program, rejecting claims that Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. He said the production of nuclear weapons is considered religiously forbidden, or haram, and that Iran is not pursuing such weapons.
Pezeshkian also discussed Iran’s position on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He said Iran would honor its commitments to reopen the strategically important waterway and resume negotiations if the United States accepts Tehran’s proposal.
He said negotiations between Iran and the United States could resume on the same day Washington accepts the Iranian offer concerning the Strait of Hormuz. However, Pezeshkian acknowledged that significant distrust remains between the two countries.
The Iranian president said U.S. sanctions, threats and military actions have contributed to the existing tensions. He also questioned whether Washington would fulfill any commitments made during future negotiations, referring to what he described as previous written commitments that were not honored.
Pezeshkian further said Iran was prepared to allow United Nations nuclear inspectors to enter the country. He said Tehran could negotiate a specific agreement concerning nuclear inspections while discussions over Iran’s nuclear program continue.
