Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that Russia could retaliate if Western countries seize Russian commercial ships, describing such actions as an act of piracy.
Speaking while reviewing naval military exercises on Sakhalin, Putin said Russia would respond if European and Western countries continued taking Russian commercial vessels into custody.
Putin said Russia would act where it considers such measures necessary and appropriate. His remarks came amid growing tensions over restrictions placed on Russian maritime activity.
The Russian president accused Western countries of attempting to limit the movement of Russian vessels. He said the seizure of Russian commercial ships amounted to piracy and suggested Moscow would not accept such actions without a response.
Putin also accused NATO of expanding its involvement in the Asia-Pacific region. He said tensions were also increasing in the Arctic, adding to concerns over maritime security and Russia’s strategic interests.
In recent months, Sweden, France, Britain and Belgium have intercepted vessels allegedly linked to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet. The measures have been part of wider efforts by Western countries to restrict maritime activities connected to Russia.
The United States also seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the Atlantic in January. Putin’s latest remarks indicate that Moscow could consider reciprocal measures if Western governments continue targeting Russian commercial ships.
