Speaking in Ankara ahead of the NATO summit, US President Donald Trump announced that the memorandum of understanding signed to ease tensions with Iran was no longer valid. He also ruled out any new negotiations with Iranian officials.
Trump sharply criticized Iran’s leadership during his remarks, accusing its officials of acting in bad faith and claiming the United States had invested significant time in unsuccessful diplomatic efforts. He alleged that Iranian authorities had targeted him for years and argued that previous engagement with Tehran had failed to deliver lasting stability.
The political announcement came alongside a major military development. The US military confirmed that it had carried out a series of strikes against Iranian targets following recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. According to US officials, the operation focused on military infrastructure believed to support maritime threats.
American authorities stated that more than 80 strategic locations were targeted, including air defense systems, command centers and coastal radar installations. Officials also claimed dozens of fast attack boats linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard were destroyed. Washington said the objective was to protect international shipping lanes and reduce future security risks.
The United States also announced fresh economic measures targeting Iran’s oil sector. The move effectively suspended Tehran’s ability to legally export oil under previous arrangements, reversing one of the key economic benefits associated with earlier diplomatic efforts. Energy markets reacted quickly, with Brent crude prices rising by more than five percent.
Meanwhile, reports from southern Iran indicated explosions in several areas, including Bandar Abbas, Sirik and Qeshm Island. Although Iranian authorities had not provided a detailed assessment at the time of reporting, heightened military activity raised concerns about the possibility of further escalation across the Gulf region.
The latest developments have significantly increased uncertainty in the Middle East and raised questions about the future of diplomacy between Washington and Tehran.
