Xi Meets Trump as China’s Trade Surplus Tops $1 Trillion

Xi Trump summit talks are set to focus heavily on trade as Chinese exports continue to expand globally. Chinese President Xi Jinping is preparing to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on September 24, with expectations centered on extending a trade truce between the two countries.

China’s global trade surplus is on track to exceed $1 trillion for a second consecutive year. The strong export performance has continued despite US efforts to reduce Chinese imports and address the trade imbalance between the two economies.

The two leaders are expected to discuss whether to extend a trade agreement reached last year. The arrangement helped prevent a major escalation in tariffs and reduced the risk of further disruption to the global economy.

Trade will not be the only issue during the Xi Trump summit. Taiwan is also expected to feature in discussions, particularly over US arms sales to the island and Beijing’s concerns about Washington’s support for Taipei.

Chinese exports have remained strong despite challenges at home, including weaker domestic demand and a prolonged property sector crisis. More than half of the approximately 6,500 product categories China has sold to the United States this year have recorded growth compared with 2025.

US officials are also expected to seek progress on issues including purchases of American products and efforts to restrict chemicals used to produce illegal drugs. Chinese business representatives may accompany Xi during his visit and seek improved access to the US market.

Iran could also become part of the wider discussions surrounding the Xi Trump summit. Washington wants Beijing to use its influence over Tehran, while China has shown limited interest in taking steps that could significantly pressure Iran. The meeting is therefore expected to cover trade and broader strategic issues.
