The Northern India floods have claimed at least 25 lives after torrential monsoon rains triggered flash floods and landslides across several northern and northeastern states. Authorities said more rainfall is expected in the coming days, raising concerns over further damage and disruptions in vulnerable areas.
According to officials, at least 15 people died in separate rain-related incidents in Poonch, Rajouri, and Doda districts of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Rescue teams are continuing search operations after several people were reported missing following landslides and flash floods in the affected districts.
In the northeastern state of Nagaland, persistent rainfall triggered multiple landslides that killed at least nine people. Local authorities confirmed that rescue workers recovered four bodies while emergency teams continued relief operations in areas cut off by damaged roads and unstable terrain.
The neighbouring state of Assam also reported one fatality caused by flooding. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said more than 57,000 people across seven districts have been affected by rising floodwaters, with authorities monitoring rivers and relocating vulnerable residents to safer locations.
India’s Meteorological Department said active monsoon conditions are expected to continue across northwest, eastern, and northeastern parts of the country for the next six to seven days. Officials warned that additional heavy rainfall could increase the risk of flooding, landslides, and transportation disruptions.
The severe weather has also affected neighbouring Nepal, where the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 27 deaths, one missing person, and 69 injuries since the monsoon season began in mid-June. Heavy rain, floods, landslides, and lightning have caused widespread disruption, while several highways, including the main route connecting Kathmandu with the southern plains, remain blocked by landslide debris.
The Northern India floods highlight the continuing impact of the annual monsoon across South Asia. Emergency agencies in both India and Nepal remain on high alert as weather authorities forecast additional rainfall that could worsen flooding, landslides, and humanitarian challenges in the region.
