PM Shehbaz Gilgit-Baltistan cooperation remained the focus of a meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met newly appointed Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain. The two leaders discussed regional affairs and ongoing development initiatives.
The prime minister congratulated Amjad Hussain on assuming office and reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to working closely with the newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan administration. He said the partnership aims to improve the welfare and prosperity of the region’s residents.
During the meeting, PM Shehbaz Gilgit-Baltistan development plans included investments in renewable energy, tourism, infrastructure, healthcare, and education. He said the government is pursuing sustainable development projects to strengthen the region’s economy and improve public services.
The prime minister announced that the federal government is prioritising a 100-megawatt solar power project to help meet local energy needs. He also said Daanish Schools and a Pakistan Asaan Khidmat Centre will be established in Gilgit to expand educational opportunities and improve public service delivery.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, and Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema also attended the meeting. The participants reviewed development priorities and coordination between the federal and regional governments.
Amjad Hussain, representing the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was sworn in as Gilgit-Baltistan’s chief minister on July 6. He was elected on June 22 after the June 7 elections, in which the PPP secured 12 seats in the 24-member Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.
The PPP later formed the regional government with the support of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), reflecting the coalition arrangement at the federal level. The PM Shehbaz Gilgit-Baltistan meeting underscored both governments’ commitment to accelerating development across the region.
