Asad Qaiser Says ISI Officials Were Providing Input on FATF Bills

The debate over Asad Qaiser FATF Bills comments intensified after former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser responded to remarks made by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif regarding meetings held during his tenure as speaker.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Asad Qaiser addressed Khawaja Asif’s statement that meetings involving intelligence officials had taken place at his residence. Qaiser clarified that the location in question was not his personal home but the official residence of the Speaker of the National Assembly.

According to Qaiser, the meetings were held in connection with legislation related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). He stated that his role at the time was to facilitate dialogue and consensus-building between the government and opposition parties on important legislative matters.

The former speaker said officials from Pakistan’s intelligence services were present solely to provide technical input on anti-money laundering laws and FATF-related bills. He rejected any suggestion that the meetings involved matters beyond the legislative process.

Qaiser also responded to Khawaja Asif’s remarks regarding matters of conscience and political responsibility. He questioned whether concerns surrounding the 2024 general elections should also be considered when discussing political accountability.

Referring to electoral contests in Sialkot, the PTI leader claimed that Khawaja Asif should address questions regarding his own political mandate before criticizing others. He argued that public representatives should remain answerable to voters and democratic institutions.

The exchange highlights continuing political tensions between government and opposition figures in parliament. The discussion over Asad Qaiser FATF Bills meetings has once again brought attention to the legislative process surrounding financial compliance laws and the political disagreements linked to them.
