Iran has warned of a devastating response to any new US threats after Washington announced plans for what it described as its toughest-ever economic pressure campaign against Tehran.
The warning came after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would impose severe financial penalties aimed at increasing pressure on Iran’s leadership. He is expected to provide further details on the measures on Monday.
US President Donald Trump also warned countries against providing Iran with what he described as any form of economic lifeline. His comments have raised concerns about wider international pressure on Tehran.
Iran’s Armed Forces chief of staff, Major General Ali Abdollahi, said the country was prepared to respond to new threats. He described Iran’s potential reaction as broad and decisive.
Abdollahi said Iran’s military was prepared across land, sea, air, air defence and cyberspace. Iranian media quoted him as warning that the response to any new threats would be severe.
The latest developments have increased tensions between Washington and Tehran. The US is seeking to intensify economic pressure on Iran, while Iranian officials have warned that further measures could trigger a strong response.
The dispute comes as Iran US economic sanctions remain a major source of tension between the two countries. Any expansion of US financial restrictions could also affect countries and businesses maintaining economic ties with Iran.
