Nighat Shah retirement

JSMU Issues Two Notifications on Nighat Shah’s Retirement and New Contract

According to the university documents, Dr Nighat Shah retired from government service on August 12, 2026, after reaching the applicable retirement date. She was serving as Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (BPS-21) as well as Pro Vice Chancellor at JSMU.

What has drawn attention is that the university issued another notification allowing her to continue working at the institution immediately after her retirement. Under the new arrangement, she has been appointed on a three-year contract as Professor of Gynaecology.

The retirement notification, issued by JSMU Registrar Dr Azam Khan, states that Dr Nighat Shah retired from government service from the afternoon of August 12. The document also refers to her appointment as Pro Vice Chancellor through a notification issued on October 6, 2025.

Her appointment as Pro Vice Chancellor had been linked to her period of government service and was therefore set to end with her retirement. However, the university subsequently issued a separate notification regarding her continued services as a professor.

According to the second notification, Dr Nighat Shah has been permitted to continue at JSMU for three years on a contractual basis following a decision of the Sindh government and approval from the competent authority, the university’s Syndicate. The new contract takes effect from August 13, 2026.

This means there is no gap between her retirement and the start of her new contractual appointment. Based on the two notifications issued by JSMU, Dr Nighat Shah retired from government service on August 12 and resumed her professional duties at the same university the following day under the three-year contract.
