US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has strongly rejected the idea of introducing a Strait of Hormuz toll system, calling it unacceptable and warning that it would not be tolerated by the international community.
Speaking during a diplomatic engagement in Sweden, Rubio said Iran’s reported attempts to implement toll charges on the strategic waterway would create serious global concerns. He emphasized that freedom of navigation through the Strait must be protected.
The Strait of Hormuz toll system debate has intensified amid rising tensions in the region, where Iran is accused of attempting to regulate or restrict maritime traffic through one of the world’s most important energy routes.
Rubio stated that although there have been some signs of progress in diplomatic discussions involving Iran, major issues remain unresolved. He warned that any attempt to impose new restrictions on shipping would further complicate peace efforts.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass daily. Any disruption in this route is seen as a major risk to global energy stability and prices.
US President Donald Trump also recently stated that Washington does not support any form of toll or restriction in the Strait. He reiterated that negotiations with Iran are ongoing, but nuclear concerns remain a key issue.
Trump further said that the United States will not allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons and may take control of highly enriched uranium stockpiles as part of future agreements, highlighting continued tensions in the diplomatic process.
Experts believe the Strait of Hormuz toll system controversy reflects broader geopolitical struggles over control of global shipping routes and energy security, with negotiations still far from a final resolution.
