New Zealand China patrol flight tensions have increased after Beijing accused Wellington of conducting close surveillance operations near its airspace and waters, prompting a strong response from New Zealand authorities.
According to China’s foreign ministry, a New Zealand P-8A patrol aircraft carried out continuous reconnaissance in areas of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, which Beijing claims affected its security interests.
However, New Zealand strongly defended the New Zealand China patrol flight, stating that the mission was part of long-standing operations aimed at monitoring sanctions violations involving North Korea at sea.
The New Zealand Defence Force clarified that its aircraft was operating under United Nations Security Council resolutions and followed all international aviation laws and procedures during the patrol flight.
Officials stressed that the New Zealand China patrol flight was conducted professionally and responsibly, with no intention to provoke or escalate tensions in the region.
This development comes amid already strained relations between the two countries, following earlier naval exercises conducted by China near New Zealand waters.
