PM orders transparency in GB solar project

Gilgit-Baltistan solar project moved a step forward on Wednesday as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to ensure complete transparency in the implementation of the proposed 100-megawatt initiative. Chairing a review meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister described clean, affordable and sustainable energy as a central component of Pakistan’s long-term energy strategy.

The prime minister said the 100MW Gilgit-Baltistan solar project is a federal government initiative aimed at improving the lives of people across the region. He instructed the Power Division to complete the project within the approved timeline and ensure that all work meets the required standards.

Shehbaz Sharif also emphasized transparency in procurement and financial management. He directed officials to make all project-related payments only after independent third-party verification, ensuring accountability and efficient use of public funds.

Officials informed the meeting that rooftop solar systems with a combined capacity of 18MW, along with battery storage facilities, will be installed on 499 government buildings across Gilgit-Baltistan by December 2026. The project is expected to reduce electricity costs and improve energy reliability for public institutions.

The meeting was also told that the PC-I for an 82MW utility-scale solar project has been submitted to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval. Once approved, the project will significantly expand renewable energy generation in the region.

According to the briefing, the 82MW utility-scale project is expected to benefit around 1.3 million people by improving electricity supply and reducing power shortages. Officials said it would also play an important role in eliminating load-shedding across Gilgit-Baltistan.

The review meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, and senior government officials. The government says the project reflects its broader commitment to promoting renewable energy and strengthening Pakistan’s energy security.
