Macky Sall meets PM Shehbaz as Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to multilateral cooperation and its continued support for the United Nations. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed former Senegalese president and United Nations secretary-general candidate Macky Sall during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s House on Friday, where both sides discussed the UN’s role in addressing global challenges.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding support for the United Nations and emphasized the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation in an increasingly complex global environment.
The prime minister expressed hope that the next UN secretary-general would effectively advance the organisation’s three core pillars—international peace and security, sustainable development and human rights—while maintaining a balanced and inclusive approach to global governance.
Shehbaz Sharif also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter. He stressed the importance of implementing United Nations Security Council resolutions in both letter and spirit and underlined respect for international law and treaties as essential for lasting global peace and stability.
During the meeting, Macky Sall appreciated Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to the United Nations. He commended the country’s constructive role in promoting international peace, dialogue and multilateral cooperation through various UN platforms.
The meeting comes as prospective candidates continue diplomatic engagements ahead of the selection process for the next United Nations secretary-general. Such consultations are aimed at strengthening international support before the formal appointment process begins.
