Pollution-Free Ports Boost Safety and Economic Growth

Pollution-free ports are essential for safer navigation and stronger economic growth, according to Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a clean and sustainable maritime environment across major port facilities.

The statement came as the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) carried out its weekly clean-up operation through the Marine Pollution Control Department. During the drive, more than 16,430 kilograms of solid waste were removed from high-risk harbour zones.

Officials explained that the collected waste included plastic debris, floating garbage, organic material, and discarded fishing equipment. These pollutants pose serious risks to marine ecosystems, port operations, and coastal biodiversity.

The clean-up operation covered key areas such as East Wharf, West Wharf, Boat Basin Jetty, and dumping zones. These locations experience heavy vessel traffic, cargo activity, and urban runoff, making them more vulnerable to pollution.

According to the ministry, the operation involved 54 boat deployments and 164 personnel working in shifts to ensure complete coverage. All waste was safely transferred to the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board’s facility for proper disposal.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said that maintaining pollution-free ports directly improves vessel turnaround times and reduces operational risks. He emphasized that clean harbours support efficient trade and long-term economic stability.

The minister also highlighted plans to introduce modern waste collection systems and advanced monitoring tools. He stressed that continued cooperation between stakeholders is essential to protect marine life and ensure sustainable maritime development.
