Russian and Iranian foreign ministers have called for a Russia Iran diplomatic solution to tensions surrounding Iran and the wider Middle East crisis. The two officials discussed the situation during a meeting in New York on Thursday.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, regional and international issues were discussed, with particular attention given to developments involving Iran.
Moscow said both sides stressed that diplomacy remains the only option for resolving the crisis. The Russian Foreign Ministry said there was no alternative to a diplomatic settlement of what it described as a crisis caused by actions by the United States and Israel.
The Russia Iran diplomatic solution position comes as tensions in the Middle East remain high. Moscow and Tehran have maintained close political relations and have increasingly coordinated their positions on regional and international issues.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a strategic cooperation partnership in 2025. The agreement aimed to deepen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in areas including defence, although it does not contain a mutual defence clause.
Russia and Iran have also exchanged military expertise and equipment as their bilateral relationship has developed. The two countries have continued to strengthen cooperation despite differences over several regional issues and changing international conditions.
Earlier this month, Pezeshkian thanked Putin for Moscow’s position on the conflict involving Iran. He also said that Russia and Iran could work together against what he described as US unilateralism, highlighting the growing importance of their strategic partnership.
