Pakistan Receives Third Qatar LNG Cargo as Energy Demand Surges Amid Gulf Tensions

Islamabad: Pakistan’s fragile energy supply chain received another major boost after the LNG tanker “Fuwairit” successfully crossed the sensitive Strait of Hormuz and entered Pakistani maritime territory.

The vessel is expected to dock at the Engro LNG Terminal on Tuesday or Wednesday, May 26 or 27, 2026, according to officials familiar with the development.

Senior officials from Pakistan’s Petroleum Division confirmed that another LNG shipment is also scheduled to arrive within the next few days. The upcoming cargo will berth at the Pakistan GasPort Consortium Limited (PGPCL) terminal at Port Qasim.

The latest arrivals highlight Islamabad’s efforts to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies during the ongoing summer season, when electricity demand traditionally rises sharply across the country.

The arrival of Fuwairit marks the third LNG shipment from Qatar in less than two weeks.

Earlier, on May 15, the LNG carrier “Mehzam” delivered nearly 160,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas at the PGPCL Terminal-2 at Port Qasim. Two days before that, on May 13, the Q-Flex LNG vessel “Al Kharratiyat” arrived at the Engro terminal.

Energy sector officials say these back-to-back LNG deliveries demonstrate Pakistan’s growing reliance on long-term LNG agreements with Qatar. The dependence comes at a time when global spot LNG prices are rising rapidly due to geopolitical uncertainty, shipping security risks, and fears of supply disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysts warn that any escalation in Gulf tensions could impact global energy markets and increase import costs for energy-dependent countries like Pakistan.

However, officials believe the timely arrival of LNG cargoes will help stabilize Pakistan’s power generation system and reduce the risk of gas shortages during the peak summer months.
