Pakistan has reaffirmed at the United Nations that a just and lasting Kashmir dispute resolution remains essential for peace and stability in South Asia. Addressing the UN General Assembly, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said the issue continues to demand international attention and remains on the agenda of the UN Security Council after more than seven decades.
The ambassador highlighted the Security Council’s latest annual report, noting that more than twenty communications concerning the India-Pakistan question were presented to the Council during 2025. He said the Council also held consultations on the matter, demonstrating the continued relevance of the Kashmir dispute in discussions related to international peace and security.
Emphasizing Pakistan’s position, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad stated that durable peace in South Asia cannot be achieved without a fair Kashmir dispute resolution in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination and their ability to decide their future through a process envisioned by international commitments.
By refusing to implement Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, India continues to disregard its obligations under the UN Charter, including Article 25, which requires Member States to accept and carry out the decisions of the Security Council.

The discussion at the General Assembly prompted a response from India’s representative, who maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India. Pakistan’s delegation rejected the assertion, arguing that the disputed territory remains an internationally recognized issue before the United Nations and cannot be resolved through unilateral claims.
The Pakistani envoy also referred to the Palestinian issue, describing it as another longstanding dispute requiring international attention. He welcomed diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing violence and emphasized Pakistan’s continued support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Beyond regional conflicts, the ambassador stressed the importance of United Nations peacekeeping missions and special political operations. He said Pakistan remains committed to strengthening global peace efforts and ensuring that international missions are adequately equipped to address evolving security challenges.
Pakistan also called for broader reforms within the UN Security Council. The delegation argued that future reforms should enhance representation, transparency and accountability rather than expand privileges for a limited number of countries. Officials said meaningful Kashmir dispute resolution and stronger multilateral cooperation remain essential for achieving lasting international peace and stability.
