The MQM-P Karachi projects agenda took center stage during a meeting between a delegation of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Friday. The discussions focused on the federal budget for FY2026-27 and development priorities for Sindh’s urban centers, particularly Karachi and Hyderabad.
According to MQM-P leader Aminul Haque, the party requested a special development package for urban Sindh. The delegation proposed an allocation of Rs20 billion for Karachi-based development initiatives and an additional Rs5 billion for projects in Hyderabad. The request was presented as part of efforts to address long-standing infrastructure and public service needs.
Haque said the prime minister assured the MQM-P delegation that sufficient funds had been incorporated into the upcoming budget for both Karachi and Hyderabad. The assurance was viewed as a positive signal for the implementation of key urban development schemes in the province.
A major topic during the meeting was the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme, commonly known as the K-IV project. The delegation sought clarity regarding funding and implementation timelines. According to MQM-P leaders, the prime minister pledged to ensure the release of necessary funds and expressed confidence that the project could be completed by December 2026.
The delegation also raised concerns about the M-9 route linking Karachi and Hyderabad. MQM-P representatives argued that the region requires a proper motorway connection. During the discussion, the prime minister reportedly suggested that the existing M-9 should be treated as an expressway or highway rather than a full motorway.
Another significant issue discussed was the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project. MQM-P leaders emphasized the importance of beginning work on the Karachi-Rohri section during the upcoming fiscal year. The project is widely regarded as a critical component of Pakistan’s railway modernization plans.
The meeting lasted approximately thirty minutes and included senior leaders from the ruling coalition. MQM-P officials stated that the government promised to address all concerns raised during the session. The outcome has increased expectations regarding funding commitments for MQM-P Karachi projects and other infrastructure initiatives in Sindh.
