The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has announced a public holiday across the province for the 1st of Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH, subject to the official moon sighting by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The decision was formally issued by the provincial administration department.
According to the notification, the Muharram Holiday Pakistan announcement will apply province-wide once the moon is confirmed. The government clarified that the exact date will depend on the lunar observation process carried out by the national moon sighting body.
Astronomical estimates suggest that the first day of Muharram in Pakistan is likely to fall on June 17, 2026, as the new moon is not expected to be visible on the evening of June 15, according to space and weather calculations.
In parallel with the Muharram Holiday Pakistan announcement, security arrangements have been intensified across the country, particularly in Punjab and major urban centers, to ensure peace during the religious month.
Authorities in Punjab have imposed Section 144 from Muharram 1 to 10, restricting gatherings and implementing additional safety measures. Pillion riding restrictions will also be enforced on Muharram 9 and 10, with certain exemptions for essential personnel.
Security has been tightened at imambargahs, with road closures around sensitive sites and deployment of CCTV cameras to monitor activities and ensure public safety during religious gatherings.
Officials say the Muharram Holiday Pakistan arrangements are part of broader efforts to maintain peace, security, and religious harmony during the sacred month.
