NDMA Flood Alert

NDMA flood alert issued as heavy rain expected across Pakistan

The NDMA Flood Alert has been issued for several regions of Pakistan as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected from June 16 to June 20. The National Disaster Management Authority warned that a westerly weather system could trigger flood-like conditions in northern and upper parts of the country.

According to the advisory, widespread rain accompanied by gusty winds and occasional hailstorms is likely in many districts of Punjab. Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur and several other cities may experience periods of intense weather activity during the forecast period.

The NDMA Flood Alert also covers Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where thunderstorms and rainfall are expected in Chitral, Swat, Dir, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan. Authorities have advised local administrations to remain prepared for possible weather-related emergencies.

In Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, rain and thunderstorms are forecast in areas including Skardu, Hunza, Ghizer, Diamer, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh and Rawalakot. The authority warned that rising temperatures combined with rainfall could increase water flows in rivers and streams.

A major concern highlighted in the NDMA Flood Alert is the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Rapid glacier melting in northern mountainous regions may lead to sudden flooding events, posing threats to nearby communities and infrastructure.

The advisory identified Hassanabad, Shishper, Gulkin, Gulmit, Passu, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu and Shigar among the areas vulnerable to GLOF incidents. Heavy water discharge from glaciers could affect transportation routes, settlements and agricultural land in these regions.

NDMA has instructed relevant departments to stay on high alert and closely monitor weather developments. Tourists and travellers planning visits to northern areas have been advised to check weather forecasts and road conditions before departure. The NDMA Flood Alert also warns of possible landslides and temporary road closures in hilly areas during the coming days.
