Bilawal Bhutto Defends Benazir Income Support Programme, Calls It Essential for Economy

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has strongly defended the Benazir Income Support Programme, describing it as a crucial initiative for economic stability and national security. Speaking during the National Assembly debate on the federal budget for 2026-27, he said criticism of the programme was unfair and ignored its positive impact on vulnerable communities.

Bilawal stated that the Benazir Income Support Programme has received recognition from international institutions for its effectiveness in supporting low-income families. He argued that the programme should be expanded rather than reduced, as it plays an important role in addressing poverty and strengthening social protection.

Welcoming the government’s decision to increase funding for the Benazir Income Support Programme, the PPP chairman said his party would continue to support welfare policies that help disadvantaged citizens. He stressed that economic growth cannot be achieved without investing in people and improving living standards.

During his speech, Bilawal linked economic development with social justice, saying the country’s progress depends on the well-being of workers and farmers. According to him, sustainable growth requires policies that improve livelihoods and create opportunities for all segments of society.

The PPP leader also welcomed the recent agreement between the United States and Iran, describing peace and stability as essential for economic prosperity. He said regional calm encourages investment, boosts business confidence, and creates employment opportunities for young people.

Bilawal highlighted several ongoing challenges, including security concerns along the Afghan border and tensions with India. He praised the cooperation between the federal and provincial governments in addressing national security needs despite economic constraints and fiscal pressures.

Concluding his address, Bilawal renewed his call for constitutional rights for Gilgit-Baltistan. He urged political stakeholders to build consensus on the issue and consider meaningful representation for the region. He said the Benazir Income Support Programme and constitutional inclusion both reflect the need for policies that promote national unity and long-term development.
