The government has approved a major overhaul of the national passport system through the introduction of Pakistan E-Passports and several digital reforms. The decision aims to improve transparency, strengthen security, and reduce the risk of fraud and document forgery across the country.
The reforms were approved during a high-level meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi at the Passport and Immigration Headquarters. Under the new policy, passport issuance will gradually move to a fully electronic format, replacing traditional procedures with a more secure and efficient digital system.
As part of the modernization plan, online passport applications will be integrated into the Pak-ID platform. Officials believe this step will simplify the application process and provide citizens with easier access to passport-related services from anywhere in the country.
Another major development is the introduction of a completely cashless payment system at passport offices. Beginning July 1, applicants will be required to use digital payment methods, reducing manual transactions and helping improve operational efficiency and accountability.
The Ministry of Interior has also finalized the initial framework for home delivery services. Once launched, citizens will be able to receive their passports directly at their homes within Pakistan and in selected overseas locations, reducing the need for repeated visits to passport offices.
Officials further revealed that a new business passport policy is being prepared in consultation with the Federal Board of Revenue. The policy is expected to address the needs of frequent business travelers while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
The reforms build upon earlier digital initiatives, including the launch of the SHIKRA monitoring system. Authorities say the system enables round-the-clock monitoring of the passport process, from application submission to final delivery. The latest measures are expected to accelerate the transition toward a fully digital and secure Pakistan E-Passports framework.
