Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi has said that ensuring Strait of Hormuz security from any threat is Iran’s responsibility under the recently discussed memorandum of understanding. His remarks come amid ongoing regional discussions on maritime safety and the future management of one of the world’s most important energy routes.
The Omani minister said Muscat would be ready to cooperate with regional and international efforts aimed at protecting shipping lanes and maintaining maritime security if requested. He stressed that freedom of navigation and the uninterrupted movement of commercial vessels remain important priorities for countries bordering the strategic waterway.
Al Busaidi also clarified that Oman does not support imposing mandatory transit fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. However, he said discussions could take place on a voluntary basis regarding charges for maritime, environmental, and navigation-related services linked to Strait of Hormuz security.
He explained that such services could include protecting sea routes, preventing marine pollution, and improving emergency preparedness for incidents at sea. According to the minister, consultations with concerned countries and shipping companies could help determine whether service-related fees are appropriate in the future.
Earlier, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran and Oman had reached a common understanding on a joint strategy concerning the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that both sides discussed future arrangements for managing the waterway and expressed agreement on several key issues related to Strait of Hormuz security.
Gharibabadi added that Oman, as a coastal state, supports playing a role in future arrangements for the waterway. He also said technical committees would be established and that experts from both countries are expected to begin special negotiations within the next week to prepare a draft framework and finalize shipping route arrangements.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical corridor for global energy supplies, carrying a significant share of the world’s oil trade. Recent diplomatic efforts by Iran and Oman have focused on reducing tensions, improving maritime coordination, and ensuring Strait of Hormuz security for commercial shipping and regional stability.
