The Lahore school building collapse claimed the life of an eight-year-old child and injured several others after an under-construction school building caved in on Thursday in Baghbanpura. The incident has also triggered an investigation into reports that an allegedly unauthorized summer camp was being conducted on the premises despite official restrictions.
According to rescue officials, construction work was underway on the third floor of the building when the structure suddenly collapsed. The debris crashed onto the ground floor and spilled into the adjacent street, trapping several people inside. Emergency teams launched an immediate rescue operation to evacuate children and staff from the site.
Police identified the deceased child as eight-year-old Abu Bakar. Four injured individuals were shifted to Services Hospital for treatment, while another injured child was taken to a private hospital. Doctors later confirmed that all injured patients are in stable condition and receiving medical care after suffering fractures and head injuries.
The Lahore school building collapse prompted swift action by law enforcement authorities. Police detained the school’s vice principal, six female teachers and the school watchman who were present during the summer camp. Investigators said the school principal and headmistress were absent at the time of the incident, while officials continued questioning administrative staff.
Authorities have also launched a wider inquiry into the school’s operations. The District Education Authority suspended four education officers, sealed the school and police registered an FIR against the school’s owner. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed officials to submit a detailed investigation report and identify those responsible for the tragedy.
The incident has raised serious concerns over the alleged operation of an illegal summer camp. Officials noted that permission for summer camps had expired on June 30, while approved operating hours were limited to 10am. Authorities are now examining whether safety regulations and official directives were violated.
