Polio Virus Detected in Environmental Samples from Six Karachi Districts

KARACHI: The National Emergency Operations Centre (National EOC) has confirmed the presence of polio virus in environmental samples collected from six districts of Karachi.

According to the National EOC, polio virus was detected in environmental samples from Karachi Central, East, Keamari, Malir, South and West districts.

The latest findings come after no polio virus was detected in environmental samples from the six Karachi districts during June. The new results indicate that the virus continues to circulate in parts of the city.

The National EOC also reported the detection of poliovirus in an environmental sample from Kashmore district in Sindh during July. Authorities are continuing surveillance to monitor the presence and spread of the virus.

In Balochistan, poliovirus was detected in environmental samples collected from Chaman, Dera Bugti and Quetta, according to the National EOC.

Environmental samples from Bannu and Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also tested positive for poliovirus. Meanwhile, Punjab reported the detection of poliovirus in an environmental sample collected from Rawalpindi in July.

Environmental surveillance is an important tool for identifying poliovirus circulation and helping health authorities target vaccination and prevention efforts.
