Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to introduce a modern digital monitoring system aimed at improving transparency in Pakistan’s oil and gas sector. The initiative is intended to curb hoarding, prevent profiteering, and strengthen regulatory oversight across the energy supply chain.
The directive came during a meeting between the prime minister and a delegation led by the World Bank’s Country Director. During the meeting, the delegation presented policy recommendations focused on improving governance, transparency, and efficiency in key sectors of Pakistan’s economy.
After reviewing the recommendations, Prime Minister Shehbaz instructed officials to establish a dedicated committee to examine the report in detail. The committee will evaluate the proposed reforms and submit recommendations for practical implementation.
The prime minister emphasized that digital transformation is essential for ensuring accountability and improving public service delivery. He said technology-driven monitoring can help regulators identify irregularities more effectively while promoting transparency throughout the oil and gas sector.
According to officials, the proposed digital system will support better monitoring of fuel supplies, reduce opportunities for illegal stockpiling, and discourage unfair pricing practices. The initiative is expected to strengthen market regulation and improve consumer confidence.
The government has repeatedly highlighted the importance of reforms in the energy sector as part of its broader economic agenda. Officials believe stronger regulatory mechanisms and digital governance can contribute to greater efficiency and improved investment conditions.
