Shakib Al Hasan Ready to Return to Bangladesh for Trial

Bangladeshi cricket star Shakib Al Hasan has said he is ready to return home from exile and face trial if Bangladesh’s government guarantees his security. The former captain also hopes to play a farewell series for his country.

Shakib, 39, has been living in the United States since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government was removed after a deadly student-led uprising in August 2024. He has not formally retired from international cricket and wants to represent Bangladesh at the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The former lawmaker for Hasina’s Awami League faces criminal cases in Bangladesh, including allegations linked to the killing of a protester. Shakib Al Hasan has rejected the accusations and described the cases against him as fabricated.

Speaking to Reuters by phone from Sri Lanka, where he is playing franchise cricket, Shakib said he would return if authorities assured his safety. He said he was prepared to appear before the courts and complete any legal process required by the government.

Shakib also discussed an earlier attempt to return to Bangladesh in late 2024. He said he boarded a flight after receiving assurances about his security but was later told during the journey to turn back. He eventually travelled to Dubai before returning to New York.

The cricketer said two cases remain active against him, including a murder case and an investigation by anti-corruption authorities. He said the murder allegation relates to a protester’s death on a day when he was playing cricket in Toronto. He also said his bank accounts have remained frozen during the investigation.

Shakib Al Hasan said he continues to enjoy playing franchise cricket but acknowledged that his age means he cannot delay retirement indefinitely. He said he wants to return home and play a farewell series, while also expressing hope of appearing for Bangladesh at the 2027 World Cup.
