Pakistan was represented by Additional Foreign Secretary Dr Ali Asad Gilani, while New Zealand’s Deputy Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Trade Graham Morton co-chaired the political consultations. The two sides reviewed cooperation in economic development, science, technology, education, counter-terrorism and people-to-people contacts.
During the talks, Pakistan raised several regional and international issues, including tensions in the Middle East, the situation in occupied Kashmir and concerns over what it described as violations of the Indus Waters Treaty. New Zealand appreciated Pakistan’s contribution to regional peace efforts.
The Joint Trade Committee focused on expanding trade and investment between the two countries. Pakistan’s Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul led the Pakistani delegation, while Graham Morton headed the New Zealand side. Agriculture, livestock, information technology, education and services were among the areas discussed.
The delegations also explored technical cooperation in wool production and plant protection, while discussing ways to improve market access and promote sustainable agriculture. Both sides agreed to strengthen institutional mechanisms to identify new opportunities for economic collaboration and investment.
A separate education agreement was also signed during the meetings, aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation and educational links. The latest developments in Pakistan New Zealand relations are expected to create greater opportunities for trade, investment, education and broader bilateral engagement.
