Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has demanded permission to meet former prime minister Imran Khan, offering assurances that no family member or lawyer will hold a press conference afterward.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Afridi said the provincial government and Imran Khan’s family and legal team were prepared to provide guarantees regarding the meeting.
The KP chief minister said young people were deeply concerned about Imran Khan’s situation. He claimed that the treatment of the former prime minister was creating frustration among young Pakistanis and making them uncertain about their future.
Afridi also announced preparations for a nationwide call on September 27. He said young people would come out of their homes on the date and preparations would be made across all provinces to support the planned mobilisation.
The chief minister said Imran Khan’s health was a concern and that he wanted the former premier to receive appropriate medical treatment. He again urged authorities to allow his family and lawyers to meet him.
Afridi warned that if the authorities continued to prevent a meeting with Imran Khan, a sit-in would be held outside the Supreme Court. He said protests could also take place if permission for the meeting was not granted.
The KP chief minister said he did not want any harm to come to Imran Khan. He maintained that political differences should not result in threats to the former premier’s safety and stressed that Imran Khan remained central to his party’s politics.
The remarks add to political tensions surrounding access to Imran Khan and his health. Afridi’s warning of a protest indicates that the issue could become a fresh point of confrontation between the KP government and federal authorities.
