7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Colombia, Damage Reported

A powerful Colombia earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude struck the country, causing significant damage to buildings and infrastructure and raising fears of casualties.

According to international reports, the epicentre was near San José del Palmar in Chocó province. Strong tremors caused damage in the surrounding areas and affected several communities.

Authorities in Chocó reported extensive damage in the provincial capital, Quibdó. Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba confirmed injuries and significant damage to property and infrastructure following the powerful earthquake.

The tremors were also felt in Bogotá and several other Colombian cities. Residents in parts of neighbouring Venezuela and Ecuador also reported feeling the earthquake, highlighting the strength of the seismic activity.

Bogotá’s mayor said no major widespread damage had initially been reported in the capital. However, frightened residents left homes and buildings after the shaking, while cracks were reported in several structures.

Rescue teams have begun operations in affected areas and are working to locate people who may be trapped under debris. Authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and possible loss of life.

Officials have warned that further tremors could occur and urged emergency agencies to remain prepared. The US tsunami warning system said there was no tsunami threat from the earthquake.

The Colombia earthquake has prompted emergency response efforts across affected areas as authorities work to assess damage and assist residents. Further updates are expected as rescue operations and damage assessments continue.
