Trump Says Strait of Hormuz Could Become US Territory

President Donald Trump has said the United States could soon declare the Strait of Hormuz as US territory, escalating his rhetoric amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. The Trump Strait of Hormuz statement has added to tensions surrounding the strategically important waterway.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump said Washington was preparing to impose stronger economic pressure on Tehran. He said the measures were intended to push Iran toward ending the war and accepting a settlement.

Trump’s comments came as efforts to resolve the conflict between Washington and Tehran remained difficult. The two sides have faced major disagreements over security, sanctions and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Trump Strait of Hormuz declaration could further intensify regional tensions because the waterway is one of the world’s most important energy routes. A significant share of global oil shipments normally passes through the strait.

The United States has already asserted greater control over maritime movement in the area. Trump previously said Washington had “total control” over the waterway, while Iran has rejected US claims and maintained its position over the strategic route.

The latest remarks also come as shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz remains severely disrupted. Maritime traffic has fallen sharply amid security threats and attacks on vessels, increasing concerns about global energy supplies and fuel prices.

Meanwhile, US officials have indicated that additional economic measures against Iran could be introduced soon. The combination of sanctions, military pressure and the Trump Strait of Hormuz proposal is likely to keep regional tensions high as efforts to end the conflict continue.
