Diplomatic tensions between Iran and Sweden have intensified after Tehran ordered a Swedish diplomat to leave the country within 48 hours. The move came in response to Sweden’s decision to expel an official from the Iranian embassy, prompting Iran to take a reciprocal diplomatic step.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador to formally protest Stockholm’s decision. Iranian officials criticized Sweden’s approach toward Iran and described its current policy as damaging to bilateral relations.
During the meeting, Iran also rejected allegations concerning interference in security-related matters. Iranian officials described the accusations as unfounded and objected to what they said was the continued permission for anti-Iran elements to operate within Sweden.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry further claimed that Sweden’s decision to expel the Iranian embassy official was influenced by pressure from the Israeli government. Tehran strongly rejected the allegations made against its official and defended its position on the diplomatic dispute.
Iran also raised concerns over activities by groups and individuals opposed to Tehran. Iranian officials said Sweden’s policies toward such elements had contributed to growing tensions between the two countries and expressed strong objections to what they described as hostile activities taking place from Swedish territory.
Sweden’s decision to expel the Iranian official had reportedly been linked to allegations concerning activities that Stockholm considered inconsistent with the official’s diplomatic role. The dispute has added another layer of tension to relations between Iran and Sweden, which have faced a number of disagreements over security and diplomatic issues.
