BLACKPINK star Jennie has released a preview of her new solo song, “Someone to Hold,” which will feature in Netflix’s upcoming animated film Steps. The track was released on October 15, adding a new musical project to the singer’s growing solo career.
The song is part of the official soundtrack for Steps, which offers a different take on the classic Cinderella story. Jennie shared her excitement about the project and encouraged fans to enjoy both the song and the upcoming film.
Songwriter and producer Justin Tranter wrote and produced “Someone to Hold.” He has also created three other original tracks for the film, featuring Amanda Seyfried, British pop artist Rose Gray and Chinese-American singer-songwriter Emei. The soundtrack also includes a score by Academy Award-winning composer Kris Bowers.
The animated film features a notable voice cast, including Ali Wong, Stephanie Hsu, Nikki Glaser, Daniel Radcliffe, Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage and Bette Midler. Directors Alyce Tzue and John Ripa have reimagined the familiar fairy tale with a different storyline centred on Cinderella’s stepsisters.
In the film, Lilith, voiced by Ali Wong, and Margot, voiced by Stephanie Hsu, steal the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand and take control of the Royal Ball. Their plans face another challenge when Priscilla, voiced by Nikki Glaser, takes the throne. Lilith eventually teams up with Cinderella, voiced by Amanda Seyfried, to fix the situation.
Tranter described dance music as a central theme of the soundtrack. He said Jennie’s song draws inspiration from vintage dance-pop, while Emei’s “The Understudy” blends an underdog anthem with French electro house. Rose Gray’s “Meet Me on the Dance Floor” brings a modern electronic dance-pop sound.
Jennie’s announcement follows the success of her collaboration on Tame Impala’s “Dracula” remix, which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the UK Official Singles Chart. Produced by Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing, Steps combines a reimagined fairy tale with original music from several artists.
