A Turkiye school shooting in the western province of Manisa left 11 students injured on Tuesday after a teenager allegedly opened fire outside a high school. Police detained the suspect shortly after the incident.
The shooting occurred around 8am in Turgutlu, an area near the western resort city of Izmir. Regional authorities said emergency teams and police quickly reached the school following reports of gunfire.
Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said 11 students were injured, including two who suffered serious injuries. Authorities took the teenage suspect into custody soon after the attack as investigators began examining the circumstances.
Police also detained the suspect’s parents and grandfather as part of the investigation. Images from the scene showed emergency vehicles and security personnel outside the school as concerned parents gathered nearby.
The Turkiye school shooting comes about five months after two separate school attacks in the country raised concerns about security at educational institutions. Those incidents prompted calls for stronger measures to protect students and staff.
Authorities have since introduced additional security arrangements for schools. Officials said thousands of school grounds supervisors were deployed for the 2026-27 academic year, while police were assigned to schools considered to face higher security risks.
