The newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly officially began their parliamentary term as 30 out of 33 members took the oath of office. The oath-taking ceremony marked the first major step in the formation of the new regional government following the recent elections.
The oath was administered by Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate. Lawmakers from several political parties participated in the ceremony, reflecting the diverse composition of the newly elected assembly.
Among those sworn in were 13 members from Pakistan Peoples Party and nine members from Pakistan Muslim League (N). In addition, six members representing Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party and one member from Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen also took the oath.
An independent member backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was also among those who joined the oath-taking ceremony, adding another voice to the assembly’s political landscape.
Following the ceremony, the Speaker adjourned the assembly session until 3:00 PM. The next sitting will be crucial, as members are expected to elect the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and the Leader of the House, paving the way for the formation of the new government.
Three seats remain vacant due to legal proceedings. Official notifications for one constituency in Skardu and two constituencies in Diamer have been withheld under court orders, preventing the elected representatives from taking their oath at this stage.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Peoples Party has nominated Amjad Hussain Advocate for the position of Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan.
