Pakistan has the potential to become a major player in the global Pakistan Medical Tourism industry by leveraging its internationally trained healthcare professionals, significantly lower treatment costs, and expanding reputation in aesthetic medicine. Experts believe the country can attract thousands of international patients if the right policies and investments are introduced.
According to informed sources, the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has been consulting healthcare experts regarding opportunities in medical tourism. They informed policymakers that the global medical tourism market, valued at approximately $144.5 billion in 2024, is projected to grow to $704.8 billion by 2033, with an expected annual growth rate of more than 19 percent.
Industry specialists estimate that nearly 60 percent of worldwide medical tourism demand comes from three major segments. Cosmetic and aesthetic surgery accounts for 25–30 percent of the market, dental procedures contribute around 10 percent, while fertility treatments and bariatric surgery together make up another 10–15 percent. Among these, aesthetic medicine remains the fastest-growing specialty due to rising global demand, increased social media influence, and advances in minimally invasive procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers, PRP therapy, and laser treatments.
Plastic surgeon and hair transplant specialist Dr. Salman told SIFC that aesthetic treatments are generally elective and often require multiple sessions, allowing clinics to establish long-term relationships with international patients. He noted that demand for hair transplantation and body contouring among male patients has increased rapidly, with people aged between 25 and 45 representing the largest patient group.
Dr. Salman added that Türkiye currently attracts more than one million medical tourists every year, with nearly 60 percent visiting specifically for hair transplant procedures. Rhinoplasty, facelift surgeries, liposuction, and tummy tuck procedures also generate billions of dollars for Türkiye’s healthcare economy. He believes Pakistan possesses similar competitive advantages that could help it secure a meaningful share of the expanding global market.
Experts highlighted that medical treatment in Pakistan is typically 60 to 90 percent less expensive than in many Western countries while maintaining access to qualified surgeons, modern hospitals, and internationally recognized treatment standards. Pakistan also produces more than 25,000 new doctors annually and has over 52,000 medical specialists, many holding internationally recognized qualifications such as FCPS, MRCS, and FRCS or professional training from the UK, the US, and Gulf countries.
Healthcare professionals believe Pakistan’s strategic location, cultural familiarity, shared languages, and religious connections position it well to attract patients from Afghanistan, Central Asia, Gulf countries, and overseas Pakistanis living in the UK and Canada. They stress that with supportive government policies, international accreditation, improved healthcare infrastructure, and coordinated global marketing, Pakistan Medical Tourism could become a significant source of foreign exchange, employment, and long-term economic growth.
