At least 13 people were killed and 39 injured after Ukraine drone strikes targeted Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Tatarstan region, according to Russian authorities.
The overnight attack involved hundreds of drones and targeted industrial and civilian sites, according to regional officials. A child was among those reported killed in the strikes.
Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov announced a period of mourning across the region following the attack. Russian officials said the strikes caused casualties and damage in Nizhnekamsk and other areas.
Ukraine said the operation targeted the Tanevo oil refinery near Nizhnekamsk. Reports said the facility was struck by long-range FP-1 drones produced by Ukrainian defence company Fire Point.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said the drone operation was part of a wider Ukrainian offensive covering 16 Russian regions and Crimea. Russian authorities claimed air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 456 Ukrainian drones.
Russia also launched attacks against several areas of Ukraine, causing further civilian casualties. At least five people were killed in artillery shelling in Bugaivka village in Kharkiv region, according to Ukrainian officials.
Additional Russian attacks reportedly killed at least four people and injured around 50 others across Kharkiv, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson and Donetsk regions. Ukrainian authorities said investigations had been opened into some attacks.
The latest escalation highlights the continuing intensity of the Russia-Ukraine war, with both sides carrying out long-range strikes and reporting significant civilian casualties. The attacks also come amid continuing international efforts to address the conflict.
