Pakistan’s federal government debt increased by Rs18,832 billion between March 2024 and June 2026. Pakistan federal government debt reached Rs83,642 billion after the 28-month period, according to State Bank documents.
The data showed that domestic debt accounted for Rs16,766 billion of the overall increase. External debt rose by another Rs2,066 billion during the same period. The figures indicate a significant rise in the government’s overall borrowing.
Federal government debt stood at Rs64,810 billion by February 2024, according to the documents. After the increase recorded over the following 28 months, the total debt reached Rs83,642 billion by June 2026.
The State Bank data showed that domestic debt stood at Rs42,675 billion in February 2024. It increased to Rs59,441 billion by June 2026, making domestic borrowing the largest contributor to the overall rise in Pakistan federal government debt.
External debt also increased during the period. It stood at Rs22,134 billion in February 2024 and rose to Rs24,201 billion by June 2026, according to the State Bank figures.
The documents indicate that federal government debt increased by an average of more than Rs22.4 billion per day during the 28-month period. Domestic debt accounted for most of the total increase recorded during the period.
The latest figures highlight the continued growth in Pakistan’s federal debt. The increase in both domestic and external borrowing remains a key indicator of the government’s overall financial position, according to the State Bank data.
