Islamabad: The federal government has decided to initiate a 100-megawatt solar energy project in Gilgit-Baltistan as part of its efforts to promote renewable energy and improve electricity access in the region.
The decision was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Shehbaz Sharif, where officials provided a detailed briefing on the progress and implementation plans for the solar initiative in Gilgit-Baltistan.
During the briefing, the prime minister was informed that an 18-megawatt solar power project has been planned for government buildings across the region. Officials stated that this component of the project is expected to be completed by December 2026.
The meeting was also informed that work is underway on an additional 82-megawatt solar energy project aimed at providing electricity solutions for households in Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas, and Khaplu. The initiative is expected to help reduce energy shortages and support sustainable development.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the relevant authorities to accelerate the pace of work and ensure the project is completed as quickly as possible. He emphasized the importance of efficient implementation to maximize benefits for local communities.
The prime minister further instructed officials to maintain transparency throughout every phase of the project. He called for independent third-party validation to monitor progress and ensure accountability during execution.
Addressing the meeting, Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and announced that all expenses related to the 100MW solar power project would be borne by the federal government. The project is expected to contribute significantly to clean energy production and long-term economic development in the region.
