Iran has confirmed its participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup while setting strict conditions for the tournament hosts, the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The announcement has added a political dimension to global football ahead of the summer event.
The Iranian Football Federation said the national team will definitely take part in the tournament, but emphasized that its participation depends on respect for its cultural, political, and logistical concerns. The statement highlights rising tensions surrounding the Iran World Cup 2026 participation.
Officials said Iran has submitted a list of 10 conditions, including visa guarantees for players and staff, respect for the national flag and anthem, and strong security arrangements at airports, hotels, and stadium routes. These demands aim to ensure fair treatment of the delegation.
The issue has gained attention after Canada previously denied entry to a senior Iranian football official due to alleged links with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has added diplomatic sensitivity to the situation.
Despite tensions, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will be allowed to play its matches in the United States as scheduled. The tournament is being jointly hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada.
Iranian officials insist that players and coaching staff, including those who have completed military service, should be granted visas without restrictions. They argue that sports participation should remain separate from political disputes.
The Iran World Cup 2026 participation remains officially confirmed, with Iran placed in Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. The team is scheduled to open its campaign in Los Angeles on June 15.
Iran’s football federation stated that no external pressure can prevent the country from competing, emphasizing that qualification was earned on sporting merit and must be respected by all host nations.
