Iran Set to Receive Chinese Air Defence Missile Systems: Reuters

Iran Chinese air defence missiles are expected to arrive within weeks under a new agreement aimed at strengthening Tehran’s short-range air defence network. Sources familiar with the deal said the first shipment could include Chinese-made shoulder-fired missile systems as Iran rebuilds its military capabilities.

According to the sources, the agreement is valued at approximately $60 million to $70 million and covers the purchase of between 300 and 400 man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS). The reported package includes Chinese QW-12 and FN-16 missile launchers designed to target low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and drones.

The sources said the contract was signed through Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, a Hong Kong-based intermediary. However, China’s Foreign Ministry denied the reports, describing them as “completely groundless” and reiterating Beijing’s commitment to promoting peace and ending the conflict.

Iran is seeking to strengthen its defences after months of fighting with the United States and Israel. The conflict exposed vulnerabilities in protecting military installations, missile facilities, and strategic infrastructure from precision-guided attacks and drone operations.

The report said initial deliveries are planned from Urumqi in western China before transiting through Pakistan to Iran. Pakistan’s military media wing, ISPR, rejected claims of any involvement, calling speculation about facilitating weapons transfers “absolutely concocted and false.” Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately comment.

Security sources also said Iran has explored overland routes to transport military equipment and dual-use components while reducing disruption risks. Defence analysts noted that portable missile systems are valued because they can be deployed rapidly, relocated easily, and operated by small teams around sensitive sites.

Although the agreement has reportedly been signed, sources cautioned that delivery schedules, quantities, and implementation details may still change. The reported procurement reflects Iran’s continued efforts to modernize its air defences despite international sanctions and regional security challenges.
